Textual Analysis of print products

Introduction - Digipak

As part of the promotional pack for our chose artist we were also requested to make a digipak and a magazine article/advertisement.

A digipak is a patented style of compact disc or DVD packaging, and is a registered trademark of AGI Media.

Digipaks typically consist of a gatefold (book-style) paperboard or card stock outer binding, with one or more plastic trays capable of holding a CD or DVD attached to the inside. Digipak-style packaging is often used for CD singles or special editions of CD albums.

The purpose of a digipak cover is to attract the audience’s attention to the digipak with the

images and colours displayed on the cover. It also provides the audience with important

information explaining what the digipak consists of. It also represents the artists with advertisement and marketing/ publicity

The booklet inside the case provides extra information for the audience such as what happens behind the scenes and gives us an insight in what the director was thinking when producing the videos. Furthermore is also protects the digipak itself.

The work of Director Michel Gondry

Michel Gondry was born May 8, 1963 and he is a French fil

m, commercial and music video director but also an Academy Award-winning screenwriter. He is noted for his inventive visual style and manipulation of mise en scène. His career as a filmmaker began with creating music videos for the French rock band Oui Oui, in which he also served as a drummer.

The cover of the digipak (shown above) in its unfolded position is

a bright childish illustration which is consumed on the front and back cover. It is clearly designed to give us an insight into the mind of the director as well as implying the audience to get in touch back with the childhood.

As you can see from the playful illustrations, all the images on the digipak are coming from the directors mind and symbolising his theme of childhood, construction and playfulness. He is using Lego to portray a band playing their guitar and drums on the front cover to symbolise playfulness. The colours used also give us an insight to the thoughts of the director when produces this digipak. Red is the most prominent colour on the cover which could symbolise passion, meaning the passion the director has over his music videos which he has produced

himself. Green is used on the back cover to show his natural feelings and the mixture of bright to

dark colours is representing the child inside and his playfulness. Therefore portraying the term ideology.

After carefully examining the digipak there are many symbols and logo’s printed on the covers. There is a director’s label, a DVD video logo, a producer’s logo, a bar code, export information and a classification. These are obvious thing to point out but we must include these on our own digipak to make it look professional and believable.

In summary the artwork printed for this digipak is the thoughts of the director and features a visual representation of the state of mind he is in. This therefore has made this digipak very attractive and stands out clearly to catch the eye of the audience and therefore draws them in. I will use this idea to help produce my digipak.

Below is the digipak analysis, telling you what is on the cover:

The digipak (shown above) in its unfolded position is a very gory illustration which is consumed all over on the front and back cover, as well as inside. It is clearly designed to express the dark, horrific mind of the artist through the use of blood on his hands, portraying the hatred and darkness with the tracks on the digipak.

As you can see from the illustrations all the images on the digipak is coming from the artists feelings and symbolising there theme of hatred, death and pain. This is through the use of blood to portray these feelings. The colours used also give us an insight to the thoughts of the artist when produces this digipak. Red is the most prominent colour on the cover which symbolises danger, meaning the pain the artist is feeling in their music videos. White is the only other prominent colour used on the digipak, this colour is a contrast to the red and helps highlight the blood.

After carefully examining the digipak there are many symbols and logos printed on the covers. There is a director’s label, a producer’s logo, and export information These are obvious thing to point out but we must include these on our own digipak to make it look professional and believable.

Ministry of Sound – The Sound Of Dubstep

It’s an exciting time for Dubstep. The last few years have seen the genre twist and evolve in more directions than one could imagine, but the troublesome teenage years of discovery are over and the bass-shattering genre has come of age. This one reason as a group we decided to use this genre for our music video

The digipak (shown above) shows the front cover, the back cover and the CD design. The Digi-Pak is very dark and this is created through the use of metal mesh consumed all over each cover and CD. It is clearly designed to express the dark, underground scenes associated with the Dubstep genre.

As you can see the only illustrations on the Digi-Pak is the Ministry Of Sound logo and the name of the Digipak. The colours used also give us an insight to the thoughts of the Genre on the CD. Black is the most prominent colour on the cover which symbolises danger and darkness, portraying the dark, grime of the songs. silver is the only other prominent colour used on the digipak, this colour is a contrast to the black and helps make the text stand out.

After carefully examining the digipak there are many symbols and logos printed on the covers. There is a director’s label, a producer’s logo, and export information. These are obvious things to point out but we must include these on our own digipak to make it look professional and believable.

In summary the artwork printed for this digipak gives of the feelings associated with the genre of music on the digipak of. This therefore has made this digipak very dark and in turn stands out clearly to catch the eye of the audience and therefore draws them in. I will use this idea to help produce my digipak.
