Summary of the music genre
The artist I will be using to produce a music video with are called “Chase & Status” Chase & Status are an electronic production duo from London consisting of Saul Milton and Will Kennard. The Genres associated with this duo are Drum and bass, breakbeat, dubstep, hip hop and more recently pop.
I will discuss what defines each of these genres and why our group has chosen to do a
music video is these particular genres.
Drum and Bass
Drum and Bass is a type of rave music which emerged in the mid 1990s. The genre is characterized by fast breakbeats with heavy bass and sub-bass lines. Drum and bass began as an offshoot of the
This genre can easily be incorporated into our music video through fast paced shots and quick transitions from light to dark scenes.
As a group we feel this genre would be an interesting one to use to make a music video as it is rapidly becoming more popular within today’s society and each member of our group enjoys listening to Drum and Bass.

Dubstep
Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music. Its overall sound has been described as "tightly coiled productions with overwhelming bass lines and reverberant drum patterns, clipped samples, and occasional vocals”
The earliest dubstep releases, which date back to 1999, were darker, more experimental, instrumental dub remixes of 2-step garage tracks attempting to incorporate the funky elements of breakbeat, or the dark elements of drum and bass into 2-step. In 2001, this and other strains of dark garage music began to be showcased and promoted at
The term "dubstep" in reference to a genre of music began to be used by around 2002, by which time stylistic trends used in creating these remixes started to become more noticeable and distinct from 2-step and grime.
A very early supporter of the sound was BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel, who started playing it from 2003 onwards. Dubstep started to spread beyond small local scenes in late 2005 and early 2006; many websites devoted to the genre appeared on the internet and thus aided the growth of the scene, such as “dubstepforum”. The genre was receiving extensive coverage in music magazines such as “The Wire”. Interest in dubstep grew significantly after BBC Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs started championing the genre, beginning with a show devoted to it called “Dubstep Warz” in 2006.
As a group we feel this genre would be an interesting one to use to make a music video as it is a modern genre and there music video’s are only recently being produced and broadcast to the public.

Hip-Hop is an artistic culture that originated in the 1970s in
Hip-hop culture has spread around the world. Hip-hop music first emerged with disc jockeys
creating rhythmic beats by looping breaks on two turntables, more commonly referred to as
sampling. This was later accompanied by "rap", a rhythmic style of chanting or poetry presented in 16 bar measures or time frames. And also beat boxing, a vocal technique mainly used to imitate percussive elements of the music. An original form of dancing and particular styles of dress arose among lovers of this new music.
The relationship between graffiti and hip hop culture arises from the appearance of new and increasingly elaborate and pervasive forms of the practice in areas where other elements of hip hop were evolving as art forms. Graffiti was used as a form of expression by political activists, and also by gangs such as the Savage Skulls to mark territory.
As a group we feel this genre would be an interesting one to use to make a music video as it is one of the most common and favored music genres at the moment but also because there are many symbols and images we could include in our video to represent this genre such as graffiti and break dancing.
